Daniel Schläppi/Marc Copland Duo

German bassist Daniel Schläppi is not yet a household name on this side of the Atlantic, but his duo collaboration with American pianist Marc Copland has produced one album thus far, Essentials (2012), as well as compelling music in search of a broader audience.The title of their latest album is fulfilled by their carefully selected setlist: a collection of enduring standards ("Never Let Me Go," "The Meaning of the Blues," "Yesterdays,") alternating with a parallel collection of original works ("Essential" 1-8). Lushly recorded and devoid of ostentation, the simple, honest performances on the album reflect the maturity of these two artists, each of whom has traversed much musical ground over the course of their careers.Schläppi began touring Europe widely in his 20s, recording as both a leader and a sideman throughout the '90s; working in the pits of Cabaret, Chicago, and Sweet Charity at the Bern Municipal Theater; and teaching instrumental music.Copland started his career as a saxophonist in the '60s, became a pianist in the '70s after relocating from New York to the Baltimore-Washington D.C. area, and has since recorded prolifically. His experience with negotiating the duo setting is evident in numerous duo recordings from the '00s with artists such as Dave Liebman, Greg Osby, and Gary Peacock. Copland has also led bands featuring Michael Brecker, Billy Hart, Drew Gress, Kenny Wheeler, Paul Motian, and many other jazz luminaries.We're pleased to welcome Schläppi and Copland to our stage this weekend as they kick off our fall season at The Jazz Gallery.Daniel Schläppi and Marc Copland perform duo this Saturday, September 6th, 2014, at The Jazz Gallery.
