Festival of New Trumpet Music: John Raymond's Real Feels

This Monday, September 9, The Jazz Gallery is proud to host a special double bill as part of the annual Festival of New Trumpet Music. Samantha Boshnack's Seismic Belt will kick off the evening (stay tuned for an interview with Boshnack at Jazz Speaks tomorrow), while John Raymond's Real Feels will follow.Typically a trio with guitarist Gilad Hekselman and drummer Colin Stranahan, Raymond is bringing an expanded quintet version of the group to the Gallery, featuring Matthew Stevens on guitar, Julian Shore on piano and keyboards, Chris Morrissey on bass, and Jason Burger on drums. In a previous interview with Jazz Speaks, Raymond talked about the group's focus on wide-open interplay, and expressive directness:

This has been been a band where I don’t really want to bring in a lot of crazy difficult music. The joy of it is we’re playing these simple songs: “Amazing Grace,” “Scarborough Fair,” “This Land is Your Land.” But because of the trio setting, and moreso because how we’re all approaching the music, we’re taking this simple idea and able to then take it in a lot of directions.
