The Jazz Gallery Presents: Birsa Chatterjee

Growing up in northern New Jersey, Birsa Chatterjee started learning tabla from the age of 4. He then picked up the saxophone in his school band, before studying with Bruce Williams through the Jazz House Kids program. Now after completing degrees from Oberlin Conservatory and the Juilliard School, Chatterjee leads his own quartet, developing music that draws from both post-bop and musical traditions of the Indian subcontinent.

This week, Chatterjee returns to The Jazz Gallery with his quartet featuring pianist Esteban Castro, bassist Daniel Finn, and drummer Christian McGhee. Before coming out, take a listen to Chaterjee’s composition “The Sentinel,” a piece that is both driving and spacious, leaving room for a solo from the leader that builds patiently to an ecstatic peak.

The Birsa Chatterjee Quartet plays The Jazz Gallery on Wednesday, May 17, 2023. The group features Mr. Chatterjee on saxophone, Esteban Castro on piano, Daniel Finn on bass, and Chistian McGee on drums. Sets are at 7:30 and 9:30 P.M. E.D.T. $20 general admission (FREE for members), $30 reserved cabaret seating ($20 for members), $20 livestream access (FREE for members) for each set. Purchase tickets here.
