The Jazz Gallery Presents: Godwin Louis

This weekend, The Jazz Gallery welcomes saxophonist Godwin Louis back to our stage for two nights of performances. Starting from his training in contemporary jazz practices, Louis has been on a path of exploring musical roots through his Haitian heritage, tying together different traditions of African diasporic music.

Since the release of his debut album Global in 2019, Louis has doubled down on that title to forge musical relationships around the world. In 2021, Louis helped open a jazz club in Lomé, the capital of Togo. Here’s Louis and longtime collaborator Etienne Charles performing at the rooftop club last year:

This August, Louis releases his second album as a leader, Psalms & Proverbs (Blue Room Music). Louis’s quintet previewed some of the music at a recent performance at Ladbroke Hall in London.

For his performance at the Gallery, Louis will be presenting his latest suite of compositions entitled Documented Immigrants.

Godwin Louis plays The Jazz Gallery on Friday, July 19, and Saturday, July 20, 2024. The group features Mr. Louis on saxophones, Etienne Charles on trumpet & percussion, Simon Moullier on vibraphone (July 20), Victor Dey Jr. on piano, Or Bareket on bass, and Harvel Nakundi on drums.
