The Jazz Gallery Presents: Ingrid Laubrock's Lilith

This week, The Jazz Gallery welcomes saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock back to our stage with her newest band, Lilith. The band is composed of improvisers from a younger generation who share Laubrock’s interest in gnarled polyphony and saturated texture. Laubrock describes the name and energy of the band thusly:

When I was thinking about a potential name for the band, it occurred to me how rare it is to have an Adam (Matlock) and an Eve (Eva Lawitt) in the same group. And that reminded me of Lilith, Adam’s first wife. The myths about Lilith all have one thing in common: she is not submissive, but powerful and feared. At a time when women’s rights are in danger of being abolished, put into reverse, or indeed simply don’t exist, it seems appropriate to celebrate a dangerous and uncomfortable woman.

The band first performed this past January at the Blue Note, so this week’s show is a unique opportunity to hear Lilith stretch this powerful and dangerous music in new directions.

Ingrid Laubrock’s Lilith plays the Jazz Gallery on Wednesday, March 22, 2023. The group features Ms. Laubrock on tenor & soprano saxophone, David Adewumi on trumpet, Adam Matlock on accordion, Yvonne Rogers on piano, Eva Lawitts on bass, and Henry Mermer on drums. Sets are at 7:30 and 9:30 P.M. $30 general admission ($15 for members, $10 for student members), $40 reserved cabaret seating ($25 for members), $20 livestream access ($5 for members) for each set.
