The Jazz Gallery Presents: Jazz Composers' Workshop, vol. 8

This Thursday, March 2nd, The Jazz Gallery is proud to present the latest installment of our large ensemble Jazz Composers' Workshop, curated by Miho Hazama. Featuring a big band made up of many top New York players and Gallery regulars, this series showcases work by up-and-coming composers.This week's sets will feature music by Andy Clausen, Erica Seguine, and Carolina Calvache. A trombonist and recent graduate of the Juilliard jazz program, Andy Clausen has won acclaim with his brass quartet, The Westerlies, who recently completed a tour with trumpeter Dave Douglas. Check out Clausen's composition "Edomala"—filled with delicate lyricism and surprising harmonic turns—performed by The Westerlies, below.Over the last several years, Erica Seguine has become deeply ensconced in New York's big band scene, playing piano in various groups and co-leading a band with Shannon Baker. Her own work is fleet-footed and texturally-lush, especially the composition "The Ravine."Carolina Calvache originally hails from Colombia and composes jazz for many-sized ensembles with one foot firmly planted in the folkloric music of South America. Calvache's debut record Sotareño was released by Sunnyside Records in 2014, and she can be found playing in many Latin and jazz groups throughout New York. The ensemble will perform works by Andy Clausen, Erica Seguine, and Carolina Calvache and features Jay Rattman, Alexa Tarantion, Jeremy Powell, John Lowery, and Andrew Gutauskas—saxophones; Sam Hoyt, Gabe Medd, Andy Gravish, and Jim O’Connor—trumpets; Matthew McDonald, Andy Clausen, Nick Grinder, Becca Patterson—trombones; Olli Hirvonen—guitar, Martha Kato—piano, Evan Gregor—bass, and Mark Ferber—drums.
