The Jazz Gallery Presents: Roy Hargrove Big Band

Roy Hargrove conducting recording sessions for his 2009 big band album Emergence at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, CA.

In February 1992, Dale Fitzgerald and Roy Hargrove signed a lease for a loft at 290 Hudson Street in the West Village, a space big enough for Roy to live and rehearse with this nascent big band. By 1995, the space had morphed into the original Jazz Gallery, while the big band made their first public appearance at the Greenwich Village Jazz Festival down the street in Washington Square Park (which you can check out at this link).

This Thursday, March 10, the Hargrove Big Band will once again find a home at The Jazz Gallery, beginning a monthly performance residency. The band is under the direction of saxophonists Bruce Williams and Jason Marshall, featuring a rotating cast of Hargrove collaborators. To get a taste of the band’s intensity, check out their 2019 Gallery performance, below. But as Hargrove himself said, “There’s nothing like the feeling you get when you’re hearing your compositions played live by a wall of sound."

The Roy Hargrove Big Band kicks off a new monthly residency at The Jazz Gallery on Thursday, March 10, 2022. The band‘s music director is Bruce Williams and assistant music director is Jason Marshall. Sets are at 7:30 and 9:30 P.M. $30 general admission ($10 for members), $40 reserved table seating ($20 for members) for each set. Purchase tickets here.
