The Jazz Gallery Presents: Shedrick Mitchell

In 1997, pianist/organist Shedrick Mitchell released a debut record, Introducing Shedrick Mitchell. The album featured Mitchell tearing through a potent and varied set of originals alongside his up-and-coming peers like drummer Eric Harland, saxophonist Sherman Irby, and vibraphonist Stefon Harris. In the years immediately afterward, Mitchell focused on sideman work, touring and recording with everyone from Kenny Garrett to Maxwell to Roberta Flack to Whitney Houston. For a keyboardist of forceful technique and direct expression, the lack of a followup record invited many musings on “what if…”

Thankfully over the past couple of years, Mitchell has returned to producing his own albums, beginning with 2020’s Time Reflections Distance, a solo record grounded in Mitchell’s Baptist roots. 2021’s followup What Do You Say? features Mitchell in a more post-bop vein, joined by the likes of saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins and guitarist Nir Felder.

This Friday, July 8, Mitchell makes his long-overdue debut at The Jazz Gallery alongside bassist Danielle Winshall and drummer Charles Haynes. The trio will be celebrating the release of Now & Then: 25th Anniversary, a re-released version of Introducing Shedrick Mitchell with new bonus tracks. Shedrick Mitchell plays The Jazz Gallery on Friday, July 8, 2022. Mr. Mitchell, piano, will be joined by Danielle Winshall on bass and Charles Haynes on drums. Sets are at 7:30 and 9:30 P.M.
