The Jazz Gallery Presents: Stephan Crump Rhombal
In 2016, bassist Stephan Crump released a self-titled record with a new band, Rhombal. The music was a bit of a departure for Crump, a move away from the strings-oriented music of his Rosetta Trio to a quartet with two horns and no chordal instrument—featuring trumpeter Adam O'Farrill, saxophonist Ellery Eskelin, and drummer Tyshawn Sorey. Crump's compositions for Rhombal are by turns lyrical and bristling, able to capture the bassist's multiplicitous musical personality.Since the album's release, Crump has continued to reconvene the band, allowing their contrapuntal interplay to only deepen. This Saturday, May 5, the group returns to The Jazz Gallery at the end of a spring tour, featuring Kassa Overall filling in for Sorey on drums.
