The Jazz Gallery Residency Commissions: Marquis Hill's As Above, So Below

This month, The Jazz Gallery has been presenting this season’s Residency Commission projects, beginning with Vanisha Gould’s probing song set, She’s Not Shiny, She’s Not Smoothe and Micah Thomas’s richly-textured suite Mountains. This week, trumpeter Marquis Hill caps the run with As Above, So Below.

Recently, Hill has been in an introspective space, delving into notions of ritual and routine both in and outside of music. This new commission emerges from these explorations, focusing on what Hill calls "the power of thought" and “the ability all spirits possess to create the external world based off of the temperate of our internal world.”

With cellist Zachary Brown as a frontline partner and special guest spoken word artist Doelow Da Pilotman, this is project is sure to highlight new avenues of Hill’s music.

The Jazz Gallery presents Marquis Hill’s 2023 Residency Commission As Above, So Below on Friday, June 23, and Saturday, June 24, 2023. The group features Mr. Hill on trumpet, Zachary Brown on cello, Paul Cornish on piano, Mimi Jones on bass, Buz Donald on drums, and Doelow Da Pilotman on spoken word. Sets are at 7:30 and 9:30 P.M. E.D.T. each night. $30 general admission (FREE for members), $40 reserved cabaret seating ($25 for members), $20 livestream access (FREE for members) for each set. Purchase tickets here.
