Watch: Brad Linde Extended Ensemble

It's hard to pin a label on saxophonist Brad Linde and his music. He has a vibratoless, dry martini sound on tenor sax and is a devotee of the Lennie Tristano school, performing often with saxophonists Lee Konitz and Ted Brown.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMR08YRaOLEBut Linde often places his classic sound in very modern contexts. He leads the house big band at the Washington, D.C., club Bohemian Caverns, as well as his own ensemble.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sunfKb5p884The Jazz Gallery is proud to present Brad Linde's Extended Ensemble for a special show featuring the music of up-and-coming Australian composer and arranger Elliott Hughes on Tuesday, August 12th, 2014.Hughes is an extremely versatile composer, equally comfortable writing for orchestra, chamber groups, and electronic media, in addition to jazz bands. Linde describes Hughes music thusly:

Elliott’s compositions for big band are highly energetic and bring new ideas to create a unique sound within the genre. Inspired by innovations over the past decade from composers such as John Hollenbeck and Darcy James Argue, each piece attempts to create a different mood or atmosphere, with a large focus on the overall sound of the ensemble. His music combines driving grooves, dense harmony and powerful ensemble passages contrasted with ample space for improvisation, resulting in sounds that attempt to stimulate thought and an emotional reaction.
