We've Hit A Home Run! Introducing The Jazz Gallery at Salt Space

Dear Jazz Gallerians:It is with great excitement and anticipation that I am writing to you today to announce that we have finally hit a Home Run – we have found a new space on the fifth floor at 1160 Broadway and will start our programming for the new year there on January 17th. We are thrilled to live up to our promise to stay in Manhattan, at a location in the flatiron district that is close to transportation, a few blocks from great restaurants and hotels, and a straight shot west from our fellow jazz presenter Jazz Standard.Our new home is at Salt Space, and we have entered into a shared space agreement that allows us to continue all of our programs – our Thursday through Saturday night performances, Monday night workshops, Commissioning Residencies and The Woodshed. This solution – to share a space with another organization – is one that many nonprofits are using during these difficult times. Right now, our agreement for this space runs through February 2014, and while we hope to extend our time there for many years to come, we are also exploring other permanent possibilities. Meanwhile, for the next year and maybe more, we will be in a space that is intimate and very similar to 290 Hudson Street in look and feel, and I believe you will come to think of it as your new second home, as I already have.This year has been an incredible journey. We launched a new program last January – The Woodshed at The Jazz Gallery – supported by many of you through a Kickstarter campaign. We had just barely begun the year - quite frankly on a new high, knowing we were going to do even more than before to support the jazz community - when we discovered we would be losing our home of 17 years at 290 Hudson Street.Since then we have found out how many wonderful friends we truly have. We found the courage and strength to overcome many, many obstacles because so many jazz musicians and members of our audience and field stood with us and expressed their love and support. We were able to overcome the enormous challenges many arts organizations and artists are facing today in Manhattan as well as other parts of New York City; the most significant being the climb in real estate prices at a time when most of us are experiencing declines in institutional support.But YOU - our constituents – musicians, audiences, and others in our field - were unwavering in the help and support you offered, and I have to believe it is why we ultimately were successful. We still have a great deal of money to raise in order to stabilize our organization, and our Home Run campaign will continue – we have raised about 25% of our $250,000 goal. I hope you will continue to support us at whatever level you can and in whatever way you can, now and in the year ahead.
