In September 2023, Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society released their Nonesuch Records debut, Dynamic Maximum Tension. After the group’s previous project Real Enemies that explored conspiratorial thinking in American politics, Dynamic features a series of compositions dedicated to those with more progressive visions of the future, including computer scientist Alan Turing and inventor Buckminster Fuller. Take a listen to the Fuller tribute, “Dymaxion,” below.

Argue and the album have received great acclaim this past year, including a GRAMMY nomination and a Jazz Journalist Award for best arranger. This week, Argue and Secret Society return to The Jazz Gallery—one of their longtime home bases—for two nights of performances. Expect a mix of Dynamic Maximum Tension material alongside old favorites.
